Chief Information Officer, City of Austin, Texas
Stephen Elkins is the Chief Information Officer for the City of Austin, Texas. The Columbus, Ohio, native came to the city of Austin as head of the Small & Minority Business Resources Department after a successful career at Applied Materials Inc. There, Elkins began a technology-focused revamp of the department and found his passion for running when he didn’t have his head in a computer.
Elkins was tapped to become the city’s CIO in 2009. Since then, he’s made it a goal to unify the city’s many departments and make sure they’re all moving in the same direction. He and his team are looking into ways to better use the city’s vehicle fleet, improve cybersecurity and share more public data.
He has been honored as IT Executive of the Year for 2014 and was recently named one of GovTech’s top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers for 2015. In 2014 the City of Austin’s IT organization amassed more than a dozen awards.
Standing well over six feet tall with a large frame, Stephen Elkins doesn’t fit the mold for a marathon runner. But the city of Austin’s award-winning chief information officer has run six full-length marathons and has his sights set on a half Iron Man race in the future.
