Tom Pyke manages the IT resources of the US Department of Energy, with an annual IT budget of $2.1 billion. Before joining the Department of Energy, Tom was the CIO of the Department of Commerce (2001 to 2005) with an IT career spanning over 30 years. He began his career at the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). Tom created and led the High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and became NOAA's first CIO. He was also Director of the GLOBE Program which now involves over 20,000 schools in 110 countries. Tom is the author of more than 40 technical papers and reports, and has lectures widely at conferences and symposiums. He has received numerous awards, including the Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award and two Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards. Tom is listed in Who's Who in America and is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the ACM, AAAS, Sigma Xi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Omicron Delta Kappa, and is a Fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences, from which he received the Engineering Science Award.
