Dan is the Senior Director of Intelligence at FreightWatch International, where he specializes in supply chain security management, risk analysis and program development. He is responsible for FreightWatch’s Global Intelligence Division – the fastest growing division in the firm – as well the company’s security assessment program. In his role, Mr. Burges has created and implemented supply chain security programs, to include complex physical security programs for over 200 manufacturing and logistics companies around the globe.
Mr Burges has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, providing a risk based approach to security program creation and enhancement for a variety of the top manufacturing and wholesale distributors. Mr. Burges started with the company as a business analyst, growing the Intelligence Division from the ground up. Previously, he was a security analyst with Strategic Forecasting’s security division.
Dan has been featured providing supply chain security analysis for numerous media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, CBS News, Fox News, BusinessWeek, Newsweek, the International Herald Tribune and the Financial Times. He also writes for a variety of industry and trade publications, and is a columnist for Cargo Security International.
Dan is the author of Cargo Theft, Loss Prevention and Supply Chain Security, the first authoritative book on supply chain security from a cargo loss prevention perspective, including proven methods for eliminating the risk of theft that Mr Burges developed over his experiences in the security industry.
Before joining FreightWatch, Dan served in the U.S. Army as a military police and antiterrorism officer. In 2003 he was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for 18 months of service in the Middle East, overseeing security and antiterrorism operations at a forward operating base. Dan also served as duty officer at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2002.
Dan is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point where he received a degree in Political Science and Nuclear Engineering. He also holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Just Leadership and Management and the Certified Protection Professional designation.
